But the basics are pretty simple:  <\/p>\n<p>For: the front of the boat  <br \/>Stern: rear of the boat  <br \/>Deck: the top of the boat (you may already know this!)  <br \/>Deck hatch: storage space on the deck of the kayak. Here you can store food, extra clothes and other equipment that you want to keep dry during the tour.  <br \/>Rudder: a fin-shaped blade at the end of the boat that is in the water and is used to keep direction.  <br \/>Tensioning straps: sometimes called rubber ropes or tire ropes, can be used to strap equipment to the deck.  <br \/>Seating area: where you sit.  <br \/>Footpeg: sometimes called footrests, pedals where you put your feet that can be adjusted according to your height.  <br \/>Thigh support: curved plastic parts in the seat compartment that come out from the sides of the kayak and should sit snugly on top of the thighs.  <\/p>\n<p>  as smoothly as possible. Just get in and push the kayak out into the water with the help of your arms.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>From the dock: bring the kayak to the lowest point on the dock because the higher up you are, the harder it is to get in. The kayak should be held parallel to the jetty. Hold the side of the dock with your arms, and then lift your legs in one motion and turn with your face towards the bow. Move quickly into the seat area and place the rear part on the seat so as to adjust your feet.  <br \/>From the water: if you tip over in the water, quickly turn the kayak up so that it doesn&#8217;t fill up with too much water. Take the paddle and place it under the elastic straps so that it is secure. Hold on to the end of the seating space, one hand on the side closest to you and the other on the furthest one. Kick to get some power to pull yourself up. You should lie down on the kayak with your chest against the seating area. Then focus on putting the rear end on the seat first as this helps to create balance. Turn your body around and slide into place in the seat. Then adjust your feet so that you sit comfortably. Hold the paddle with a relaxed but firm grip. The knuckles should follow the edge of the paddle blade. A good way to see if you&#8217;re doing it right is to hold the paddle above your head and if your arms are bent at a 90 degree angle, hold the paddle correctly.  <\/p>\n<p>Paddle strokes  <br \/>Forward paddling: You row forward by turning your body to the opposite side from the paddle. Put the paddle in the water, twist your body and use the twisting force to move the paddle through the water. The paddle should be lifted out of the water when the hand closest to the surface of the water is level with the hip. The hand that is placed higher up should always be the one that pushes and the hand below should be the one that pulls.  <\/p>\n<p>Hint! The force that propels the kayak forward should come from the twisting of the upper body and not from the arms.  <\/p>\n<p>Swing \u2013 sweep stroke: What you do here is forward paddling but with an accentuated paddle stroke on one side. You make a sweep stroke by placing the paddle far out in front of the boat, take a wide paddle stroke and continue all the way until you almost bump into the stern. Make the sweeping motion in the opposite direction to where you want to go. If you want to make a sharp turn, take the paddle stroke on just one side.
